Plain gut is a natural absorbable suture made from purified collagen — used where rapid absorption is wanted in superficial, fast-healing tissue.
Plain gut is absorbed by enzymatic digestion, losing tensile strength quickly (around 7–10 days) and absorbing fully within weeks. It suits tissues that heal fast and where leaving a long-lasting suture is undesirable.
Typical applications include superficial soft tissue, oral and mucosal closure, and ligation of small vessels where a short support window is acceptable.
